What are SaaS stocks?
Software as a service or SaaS is a business model that modern technology companies have adopted. In the past, software used to be sold as a one-time license, the software was distributed in CD or in other forms.
Nowadays, technology companies are shifting from one-time licenses to recurring payments where buyers pay a monthly fee to use the software and get software updates. The monthly fees are much cheaper compared to the one-time license. However, in the long run, the buyer pays much more. This is the concept of the SaaS model where successful technology companies charge their customers continuously month after month.
For example, Microsoft and Adobe are two pioneers in the SaaS business. Through their Office and photoshop products, the two companies are able to increase their revenue year after year because there aren't that many powerful alternatives to their software. Buyers are locked into their system or software.
Through the SaaS business model, new technology companies emerge in all topics of business. When investors find a business that offers unique software to a niche market and the costs of switching to a different company are high, that's when they know that they may have found a potential stock winner.
